1. How do I know what the right medication is for me?

Sominex can be taken as a sleep aid if you are experiencing temporary spells of sleeplessness. If you suffer from continuous sleepless nights, consult your doctor. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking Sominex to ensure it is the correct solution for your problem.

2. What is in Sominex?

Sominex is a sleep aid designed to relieve occasional sleeplessness. Sominex contains Promethazine Hydrochloride. This is an antihistamine which also has a sedative effect, making it a useful sleep aid.

3. How long does it take to work?

Sominex starts to work within 15-30 minutes.

4. Is Sominex addictive?

Sominex should only be used for the relief of temporary insomnia. Do not use it for more than 7 days. If you still need to take this product after seven days, seek medical advice before continuing use.

 

5. What are the side effects to taking Sominex?

Occasionally side effects may be caused. These could be:

• Drowsiness • Headaches
• Clumsiness • Disturbance of digestive system
• Dry mouth • Blurred vision
• Difficulty in passing urine • Disorientation
• Restlessness • Gi disurbances
• Palpatations • Abnormal heart rhythm
• Low blood pressure
• Dizziness, tremor, extrapyramidal effects, angle closure glaucoma and hypersensitivity reactions (including bronchospasm, angioedema, anaphylaxis and rashes) are rare side effects of antihistamines

 

Sominex can also cause other reactions. This may be in the form of:

  • A rash, difficulty breathing, swollen mouth lips or throat, sudden collapse
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Rarely, it may cause jaundice and blood cell disorders

Elderly people may be more susceptible to side effects.

If you do feel any of the above side effects or allergic reactions, discontinue use of the product immediately and contact your doctor or pharmacist at once.

6. How often should I take Sominex?

Adults should take one tablet before bedtime. Do not exceed this dosage. One tablet can be taken each night on a short term basis. If you still need to take this product after seven days, seek medical advice before continuing use.

8. What are Sominex's ingredients?

Each tablet contains:

• 20mg of Promethazine Hydrochloride • 0.3g of Carbohydrate Content
• Lactose • Maize starch
• Croscamellose sodium • Magnesium stearate

10. Can I take Sominex if I have a medical condition?

Sominex should only be taken after consulting a doctor if you have the following:

• Glaucoma • Epilepsy
• Urinary retention • Enlarged prostate
• Liver or kidney problems • Heart problems
• Asthma • Bronchitis
• Bronchietasis • Epilepsy
• Enlarged liver or prostate gland  

Do not take Sominex if you have a rare hereditary problem of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose - galactose malabsorption

 

Do not take if:

  • You are sensitive to Promethazine or other ingredients listed
  • You have a head injury or concussion
  • You regularly cannot sleep. Sominex is for short term use only
  • You have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) for depression within the last 14 days
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding without consulting your doctor first. Pregnant women should consult
    their doctor before using any medicines in pregnancy.

11. Can I take Sominex with my other medication?

Do not take Sominex if you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) for depression within the last 14 days.

 

Sominex should only be taken after consulting a doctor if you have the following:

  • Anti-depressants including tricyclic antidepressants
  • Sleeping pills
  • Anxiolytics such as benzodiazepines
  • Atropine
